It still blows my mind – samtale om Second Life

(..) it still blows my mind that people sitting at their computers in one country can meet people sitting at computers in another country and their interactions can have real effect on their offline lives

ITU møtte henne som avataren Mynci Gorky i Second Life, der hun driver Social Simulution Research Lab, for å snakke med henne om læringspotensialet i Second Life

I'm particularly interested in SL because it represents to me the future of how we'll interact in web-space as soon as some of the glitches are worked out (..) I predict that this space - or spaces like it - will help to define our ideas of information gathering, collaboration and business interaction.

Kortoski er likevel ikke overbevist om at Second Life er egnet i en tradisjonell undervisningskontekst:

but there are quite a few barriers that keep it from being ideally suited to all educational environments (..) for example, its "downtime", when Linden Lab (..) need to upgrade the client software (..) that's not so good (..) the slowness of interacting with people in a lecture-style environment (..) typing is slow :) (..) backchannel chat - it's difficult to control that (..) students wandering off to explore other things – attention (..) that's something that needs to be considered

Dette tatt i betraktning, så understreker hun at verdenen har et klart potensial for samarbeid, simuleringer og praktiske opplevelser.

While I'm not sure how personalised learning will work out in practice, I do think spaces like SL offer the opportunity to cheaply and interactively collaborate in the classroom and outside, in order to make lessons learned in formal schooling "real" they're also great spaces to learn about learning, and to explore new ways of teaching

As a platform, SL has all of the functionality that schools and other educational areas require, more is being created every day! (...) if it's used as an environemnt for collaboration, imulation and practice, its unique assets really shine
