This presentation will explore the nature and role of digital literacy in a listless age. Our age has been described as that of “liquid modernity” or as “the risk society”. In this post-modern world uncertainty is the norm – there are no answers to the big questions, and no confidence in what the future might hold. Digital technology is an integral element of this new social order. Understanding and mastering the digital is one way in which living in an uncertain society can be made less threatening. A number of literacies have converged to emphasise the importance of understanding of the digital: IT literacy, technological literacy, information literacy, media literacy, visual literacy; while theoreticians of literacy acknowledge that knowing the digital is now a part of the literacy challenge for the 21st century. From these strands we can approach the complexity of digital literacySuch a multi-level model of digital literacy will not solve the problems thrown up for the individual and the community by post-modern society, but it will make some of the experiences of that society more knowable and thus more controllable.
