What is a School of the Future?

Eva Pethrus

The phrase “School of the Future” is popping up all over the world – in the media, in government reports, and in the marketing materials and Web sites of companies that work in the public sector. What is a School of the Future? Through Microsoft’s five-year primary and secondary education initiative Partners in Learning, Microsoft has worked with governments in 101 countries to help them accomplish their local education goals. In addition to work helping several countries define what “schooling for the future” looks like, Microsoft has launched the Innovative Schools Program, taking 12 schools around the world through a two-year process of holistic reform and innovative technology integration. Microsoft also runs a yearly School of the Future World Summit, bringing together experts and practitioners from around the world to discuss educational reform. Eva Pethrus from Microsoft Corporation will discuss these initiatives and what we have learned from them.
