Throughout the developed world there are increasing reports of even very able pupils "switching off" to schooling, and low levels of disruptive behaviours in class being the norm. This is in stark contrast to the situation found in online communities associated with a range of informal activities, such as game play and fanfiction, where individuals voluntarily spend hours contributing their own input or offering feedback to others. The volume of output, and time taken to read content, would be the envy of anyone who has attempted to encourage online interaction as a vehicle for formal learning. This workshop will examine the nature of some of these communities of informal learning, and review what little research there is into this relatively new and little known phenomenon, at least that is, little known beyond the tens and probably hundreds of thousands of individuals who constitute such communities. In order to offer some structure to an investigation of this area we will look at three types of online community; those occurring in an online game, those growing up as a result of an interest in a game, and those whose primary aim is to offer an outlet for creative work inspired by a work or works of fiction that may or may not be a game. This workshop will consider how formal education might respond to this new form of learning community.
A reading will be available prior to the workshop. No prior experience of user generated content is necessary as we will look at some examples.
