The CEN/ISSS/WS-LT Workshop on Learning Technologies agreed at its 31st meeting on October 22, 2007, that a project team be created in order to progress the New Work Item European Course Description Metadata – Core Elements (working title: see below the choice of three alternatives).
The project will provide a specification for describing metadata for courses or other forms of educational offerings on all levels. This will facilitate the establishment of national and international course catalogues, course portals and other services helping students to choose from organized learning opportunities. Work will be done in close collaboration with CEN/TC 353 Information and Communication Technologies for Learning, Education and Training.
A first draft document is expected to result from the next Workshop meeting on February 6, 2008, in Brussels.
The specification will be recorded in a CWA, approved by WS-LT.
The specification will in parallel be submitted to CEN/TC 353 for standardization as a European Norm.
Experts will work on an unpaid, voluntary basis.
The Workshop decided that because of the urgency and the importance of the task, the work needs to be undertaken even without funding.
Interested candidate experts are kindly requested to send their applications by Monday, December 3, 2007, to Nikolaus Kovács, Workshop secretariat (nikolaus.kovacs (at) din.de).
Preferred method is by sending back an informal application letter together with a short Curriculum Vitae.
It is expected that a considerable part of the work can be done electronically.
It is furthermore expected that selected project team experts attend the Workshop meetings on a regular basis.
The project team will hold a telephone conference on Monday, December 10, 2007 starting at 11:00 CET (Brussels time).
All members of the project team are requested to submit proposals for the scope of the planned NWI, information about existing initiatives and specifications/standards in relation to the planned NWI and to send their opinion about the three alternatives concerning the title:
1.Metadata for Learning Opportunities
2.Educational and Training Description
3.Simple Course Syndication
The deadline for contributions to be discussed during the telephone conference is Friday, December 7, 2007.
